Minor arcana
Each minor arcanum is represented by a little card. You can see an example below.
The front side, as seen in the example below, shows what you can tell about the arcanum at a glance or with a little study. It also says what's required to unlock the arcanum's mysteries.
Unlocking a minor arcanum's mysteries often requires significant time, usually spent between expeditions. Don't be surprised if the GM asks you what chores or obligations go unmet as you pursue this magical power.
. minor arcanum . An old scroll case , fragile A leather scroll case, cracked and ageworn. Inside is a tattered letter and a pair of small, bluish ingots. It's a letter, in an older Hillfolk dialect, from an apprentice to their master. It describes a mental exercise to draw latent power from aetherium. You can learn Laoj Davith's Galvanic Infusion from the scroll, but… ... you must translate the letter. ... it'll take a few weeks of dedicated study. ... you'll use up one of the aetherium ingots (or another source of aetherium). ... you risk electrocuting yourself and/ or using up the other ingot. 1 front
When a requirement says that "you risk ___," then you'll be Defying Danger unless you can come up with some way of eliminating that risk. Learning magic is rarely easy or safe.
Meet the requirements, and you unlock its mysteries. You gain whatever move and/or follower appears on the back of the card.
You can share a minor arcanum with another PC or even an NPC, as long as it makes sense to do so. Work with the GM to identify how the requirements change for them unlocking the arcanum's mysteries.
.
For example, if you mastered Laoj Davith's Galvanic Infusion (using up both of the aetherium ingots in the process) and gave the old scroll case to another PC, then…
- ... they'd need to acquire a couple pieces of aetherium before trying to unlock its mysteries themselves;
- ... you might Aid them by sharing your notes and coaching them, granting advantage when they Defy Danger to avoid the risk; and/or...
- ... they might need only a few days of dedicated study, rather than a few weeks, as long as you show them the ropes.
If they complete all the requirements, then they can cast Laoj Davith's Galvanic Infusion, too!
Remember, though, that every arcanum is different. A magic spear that you bind to yourself with blood and fire isn't as easily shared as a spell written on a scroll.
