Epilogues

When a PC retires or passes away, give them an epilogue: a scene or two to send them off and say goodbye.

If the PC died, play out the funeral or wake. Establish the local traditions, if you haven't already. Show how NPCs react. Ask the surviving PCs to say some words. Let the dead PC's player savor the farewell to their fallen alter ego.

If the PC leaves Stonetop, then have the player narrate their departure, as well as a glimpse of their future—a "Where are they now?" moment. On the road to Lygos, wandering among the Hillfolk, stepping on the Fae paths to never be seen again… That sort of thing.

If the PC retires, play out their decision to do so. Then, now or later, have the player describe a typical day in their new life. Who are they with and what are they up to? How do they seem to be getting on? What do they seem to be enjoying? What regrets weigh them down?

Invite the other players to contribute, by asking questions, suggesting details, or playing out their own scenes of grief and loss, of absence and new beginnings.

Epilogues should skip game mechanics. These aren't scenes with conflict or even stakes. They're just vignettes, meant to give a sense of closure to a PC's tale.
